The increased incidents of violence and delinquency were commented on by the Ioannina the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis.
“We must all work together to combat violence. Whether it is violence within the home or violence in the streets involving children, the minors, and here lies the responsibility of the family, of the parents. The laws have become stricter primarily for parents who exercise custody and where there are delinquent children, all together—local communities, municipalities, social services, and schools—must be there for the children to prevent a delinquent child from becoming a criminal threat to society tomorrow or the day after,” he stated emphatically.
According to Mr. Chrysochoidis, there has been a decrease in reports of domestic violence by approximately 17%, however, arrests remain at high levels (over 3,500 nationwide this year). “There are still people who abuse their wives, their partners, their children… The law is very strict, very effective.”
“The state’s goal is to eliminate violence against women,” he noted.
Regarding road safety, the Minister announced stricter measures to enforce the new Highway Code with the installation of traffic cameras by 2027.
Also, just before the peak of the tourist season, Mr. Chrysochoidis announced that all services are being reinforced, primarily along the coast of Epirus.
