Kyriakos Mitsotakis Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined from Rhodes the outline of the government’s political strategy for the final stretch leading up to the 2027 elections, focusing on security, economic stability, and the need to avoid “experimentation” which, as he said, the country has already paid for in the past.

The prime minister spoke to citizens and officials of New Democracy, while also sending a message of unity to the party base. As he noted, the government is now entering the final year of its term, with its sights set on the spring 2027 elections.

“Every day counts—elections will be held in the spring of 2027, right on schedule,” he noted emphatically, while adding in a sharp tone directed at his political opponents: “We are experienced marathon runners—some others have already run out of steam.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis sought to highlight the difference between the government and the opposition, emphasizing that New Democracy will move forward without promises that cannot be fulfilled.

“New Democracy will be the only party with a credible proposal for Greece in 2030,” he said, adding: “I will implement what I can do, and I will not promise what I cannot do”.

At the same time, he placed particular emphasis on the issue of inflation, acknowledging that price hikes are putting pressure on households, despite wage increases.

“Inflation has eaten into wage increases, but because our finances are in order, we can support households,” he said, making it clear that he does not intend to pursue a pre-election policy of handouts. “To be more popular before the election, I will not undermine our finances,” he emphasized.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: What he said about defense

The Prime Minister placed particular emphasis on strengthening the Armed Forces and the country’s geopolitical position, linking economic policy to the need for national security.

“Here, the sky and the sea are a little bluer than elsewhere — My first duty is to keep my homeland safe — with all of your support, we have the most combat-ready armed forces our homeland has ever had,” he emphasized.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis described investment in defense as a necessary choice for the country, especially during a period of international turmoil.

“Investing in defense is not a choice but a necessity in a country at a critical geopolitical crossroads —the armed forces are here to defend sovereign rights against anyone who might feel they can encroach upon sovereignty or sovereign rights,” he stated.

Attack on the opposition and appeal to the New Democracy base

The prime minister launched an attack on the opposition parties, accusing them of having the sole aim of bringing down the government.

“And all this from an opposition whose sole concern is how to bring down New Democracy and Mitsotakis—we won’t do them that favor,” he said pointedly.

At the same time, he called on party officials to maintain the party’s unity ahead of the next election.

“We rely on our party base, which is the backbone of New Democracy—you supported us and we won the previous elections, and we will do so a third time —to continue our work, keep our country safe, and ensure progress and prosperity for all,” he emphasized.

In closing, he presented the political dilemma that, as he said, will dominate the run-up to the elections.

“Will we jeopardize what we have achieved with experiments we have tried in the past, or with a government that, despite its mistakes, has moved the country forward?” he asked.
