Voters in Switzerland rejected the proposal for a “cap” on the country’s population at 10 million residents, in a referendum that sparked a new political debate on immigration and development.

Its supporters argued that the continuous population growth puts pressure on transportation, housing costs, social services, and the environment.

At the same time, they cited excessive dependence on immigration and called for stricter controls on new arrivals.

The stance of the government and political parties

The Swiss government and the majority of political parties had opposed the proposal. They argued that such a measure could create problems for the economy and the labor market, as many sectors rely on foreign workers.

Furthermore, they warned that potential changes to agreements with the European Union could have political and economic repercussions for the country.

Citizens rejected the plan

According to the results of the <a href="https://tomanifesto.gr/referendum,the proposal failed to secure the required support from voters.

The decision is considered significant for the future of the country’s immigration policy, as well as for Switzerland’s relationship with the European labor market.
