The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will travel to Brussels, where he will participate in the European Council Summit.

Specifically, tomorrow, Thursday, June 18, at 11:00 a.m. local time, the Prime Minister will speak at an event titled “Greece’s National Social Pact: A European Model for Social Dialogue.”

The key issues on the agenda of the 27 European Union leaders are the new Multiannual Financial Framework 2028–2034 (MFF), global macroeconomic balances, the latest developments in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as issues concerning European defense and security.

With regard to the Multiannual Financial Framework, the leaders’ discussion will be based on the new negotiating framework (Nego-Box) of the Cypriot Presidency, which for the first time includes indicative budgetary figures.

The Greek position, as publicly stated by the prime minister, is that the EU’s ambitious goals must be matched by a European budget that is equally ambitious in scale. At the same time, the revenue of the new budget —whether from existing or new own resources, or from other sources of funding—should be directed toward meeting the Union’s expanded strategic and investment priorities.

For Greece, a key priority remains safeguarding the funds allocated to Cohesion and the Common Agricultural Policy, as well as ensuring that efforts to strengthen European competitiveness do not lead to a widening of inequalities between member states and regions.

Furthermore, the prime minister is expected to advocate for joint European financing —including joint European borrowing—for investments in common European goods, such as energy and defense.

In the context of the discussion on the EU’s competitiveness and global macroeconomic balances, the Greek position focuses on the need to strengthen the competitiveness of the European economy, which is a decisive factor in shaping the trade deficit with China.
