A decrease of 2,873 births or 4.2% was recorded in the country last year by ELSTAT, as live births totaled 65,594 (33,620 boys and 31,974 girls), compared to 68,467 (35,216 boys and 33,251 girls) in 2024, while, the number of deaths totaled 420, marking a 7.5% decrease compared to 2024, when 454 births deaths.

According to new research from ELSTAT, in 2025 compared to 2024, the most significant decreases were recorded in November and January, by 10.4% and 10%, respectively. The most significant increases are recorded in September and May, by 3% and 2.9%, respectively.

An analysis of all live births by the mother’s age group in 2025 compared to 2015 shows that the most significant declines, in absolute terms, are recorded for the age groups 30 to 34 years (12,356 births), 25 to 29 years old (7,922 births), and 35 to 39 years old (4,597 births). Meanwhile, the largest increases are observed in the 40 to 44 age group (1,031 births) and the 45 to 49 age group (445 births). Accordingly, based on a comparative analysis of all live births by the mother’s age group in 2025 compared to 2005, the most significant decreases, in absolute terms, are recorded for the age groups 25 to 29 years (20,775 births), 30 to 34 years old (13,983 births), and 20 to 24 years old (10,177 births). Meanwhile, the largest increases are observed in the 40 to 44 age group (2,955 births) and the 45 to 49 age group (852 births).

The ratio of live births to mothers with Greek citizenship to births to foreign mothers stood at 8.9 to 1 in 2025, compared to 6.7 to 1 in 2015 and 5.1 to 1 in 2005.

An analysis of all live births by region of permanent residence of the mother in 2025 compared to 2024 a decline in births is observed in 12 of the country’s 13 regions. The most significant declines, in absolute terms, are recorded in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia, and the Peloponnese, by 1,007, 656, and 273 births, respectively. Meanwhile, an increase was observed only in the region of Crete, by 129 births.
