From June 22 through June 24, 2026, Hellenic Train is modifying its schedules on the Athens – Thessaloniki route, with buses replacing part of the rail service due to infrastructure restoration projects by OSE.
Restoration work on the Lianokladi section – Larissa
According to an announcement by Hellenic Train, the temporary changes are taking effect due to scheduled railway infrastructure restoration projects being carried out by OSE on the Leianokladi–Larissa section. The works are part of the infrastructure restoration program for Thessaly, which suffered significant damage from the extreme weather events Daniel and Elias.
To serve passengers, the company will provide buses that will cover the Lianokladi – Thessaloniki route and vice versa, where the necessary transfers will take place.
How the routes will operate
For the Athens – Thessaloniki (IC50 and IC56), trains will operate as scheduled to Lianokladi. From there, passengers will continue by bus to Thessaloniki, Platy, Katerini, and Paleofarsalo – Larissa. At the same time, a bus will run from Paleofarsalo with stops in Larissa, Katerini and Platy, ending in Thessaloniki, with departures at 10:00 and 21:00.
On the Thessaloniki–Athens route (IC51 and IC57), passengers will first be transported by buses to Lianokladi and will then continue their journey by train to Athens.
Direct buses will run from Thessaloniki to Lianokladi with departures at 05:55 and 16:49, from Platy at 06:20 and 17:14, from Katerini at 06:43 and 17:37, as well as from Larissa via Paleofarsalos at 07:26 and 18:20.
In addition, a bus will be operated to serve the following stops in sequence: Thessaloniki – Platí – Katerini – Larissa – Palaiofarsalos, with a final destination of Lianokladi, also departing from Thessaloniki at 05:55 and 16:49.
Hellenic Train clarifies that the Larissa–Thessaloniki–Larissa commuter train service will operate as scheduled, while urging passengers to check the company’s official communication channels before their trip for any changes and schedule details.
