The Greek Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, by helping to advance the new package on the rights of passengers of airlines. The relevant debate had been at an impasse since 2013, making it one of the most difficult unresolved issues in the European transportation sector.

The intervention that broke the deadlock

Thanks to the efforts of Tzitzikostas, the package of measures moved forward for approval by the European Commission and the European Parliament, paving the way for significant improvements in passenger protection. The new regulations provide for higher compensation for long delays, depending on the distance in kilometers of the flight, as well as simpler procedures for refunds.

At the same time, the new framework strengthens protection for children and families, while aiming to make the enforcement of rules more effective throughout the European Union. The successful completion of the process is largely attributed to the initiatives and negotiating efforts of the Greek Commissioner, who took it upon himself to break the deadlock on a dossier that had been stalled for more than a decade.
