The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia lost its external power supply today for the 20th time since the start of the military conflict in Ukraine.
According to the IAEA, its team at the plant was informed that a problem with the internal power lines caused the latest disconnection of the only available line.
The agency also reported that backup diesel generators were activated to ensure core cooling and other critical nuclear safety functions.
Meanwhile, repairs to the main power line are continuing under a local ceasefire brokered by the IAEA, with its teams monitoring the work on both sides of the Dnieper River.
The IAEA has been warning for months that the ongoing power outages pose a serious risk to nuclear safety, as the plant relies on backup generators to cool the reactors when the connection to the grid is lost.
