Firefighters are waging a titanic battle against the flames in Euboea, following the major forest fire that broke out at noon on Saturday.
The fire broke out in the area between Almyropotamos and Mesochoria, in the Municipality of Karystos, with 112 having sent a message to evacuate two settlements.
A message was sent to the area by 112, urging citizens in Mesochoria and Raptioi to evacuate toward Styra. “If you are in the areas of Mesochoria and Raptioi, evacuate toward Styra,” while residents are urged to follow the authorities’ instructions.
Firefighting efforts are being made particularly difficult by the strong winds blowing in the area. According to reports from eviaonline.gr, aerial firefighting resources are experiencing difficulties drawing water from Karystos and are forced to move toward Aliveri to refuel, which is prolonging the duration of the operations. Meanwhile, for safety reasons , power has also been cut off in the area .
Fire department forces have been reinforced, and 100 firefighters, four ground teams, and 29 fire department vehicles are now on the scene, while six helicopters—one of which is serving as a coordination helicopter—and eight aircraft are providing aerial support. Also participating in the firefighting effort are local government water trucks, construction equipment, and volunteers.
