Indications of progress in negotiations US-Iran aimed at agreement and de-escalation of the crisis.
Significant progress is being made in behind-the-scenes conversations between the US and Iran, according to a Pakistani source involved in the mediation, boosting the probability of a short-term agreement to end the crisis.
As he told Reuters, “both sides agree in principle – technical details will follow,” confirming that negotiations have entered a critical stage.
According to the same reports, an upcoming meeting between Washington and Tehran could lead to the signing of a memorandum of understanding, which could be a forerunner of a comprehensive agreement within 60 days.
Pakistan’s Army chief Asim Munir, who has been holding talks in Tehran since April 15, is reportedly playing a key role in the contacts, helping to make progress on critical issues.
Thorns in the negotiations
Despite the positive momentum, significant disagreements remain, notably over Iran’s nuclear program. According to sources:
- The US is proposing a 20-year suspension of nuclear activities
- Tehran proposes a period of 3 to 5 years
- Iran seeks lifting of international sanctions
- Washington seeks removal of highly enriched uranium
However, signs of compromise are being recorded, with Tehran considering sending some of its stockpiles abroad.
U.S. President Donald Trump appeared optimistic about an immediate deal, while also referring to the need for Hezbollah to support the 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.
