Call for proposals funding in the amount of 120,000 euros to the National Observatory of Athens has published the Ministry of Development, for the project: “Reassessment of seismicity in the Attica region based on a three-dimensional velocity model.”
The goal is to improve understanding of seismic activity in the Attica Basin and to strengthen tools for assessing seismic risk.
According to the decision, published on Diaugia, the project is a continuation of a previous research effort on microseismicity and the active tectonic structures of Attica. The main objective is to utilize a three-dimensional seismic velocity model to recalculate and more accurately locate of earthquakes recorded in the region over the past 15 years and seismic protection.
The study will utilize modern data analysis methods and machine learning techniques to process large volumes of seismological information. The results are expected to contribute to more accurate identification of active faults and a better characterization of the seismic behavior of Attica.
The final deliverable will include an updated seismicity catalog, which can be utilized in studies on seismic hazard, in the design of major engineering projects, and in Civil Protection operational planning.
The public expenditure for this call amounts to 120,000 euros and is covered by funds from the Ministry of Development’s Sectoral Development Program for the period 2026–2030, and the “Strengthening Research and Innovation” axis. Proposals may be submitted until December 31, 2026.
