The need for a comprehensive and substantive response to the problems facing the Greek fishing industry was emphasized by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schinas, upon his arrival at the EU Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries taking place in Brussels.
As he emphasized, fisheries constitute the “backbone” of Greece’s coastal and island regions, noting that the sector is facing a series of serious challenges.
Among these, Mr. Schinas cited the high cost of fuel, which, he said, has grounded a large portion of the fishing fleet, as well as the spread of invasive species, such as rabbitfish, which pose a threat to Greek waters.
At the same time, he highlighted the consequences of climate change, as well as competition from third countries that do not adhere to the same standards as those applicable to European fishermen.
“All these pressures on the Greek fishing industry make a comprehensive response imperative,” noted Mr. Schinas.
As he announced, this coming Thursday a broad meeting will be held at the ministry with the participation of representatives of the Greek fishing industry.
The goal of the meeting, according to the Minister of Rural Development and Food, is to jointly formulate substantive and convincing responses to the problems facing the sector.
