The Minister of Migration and AsylumThanos Plevris, met at the Ministry of Migration and Asylum with ambassador of the United States to Greece, Kimberly Gilfoyle.

The main topics of the meeting were developments in the migration issue and the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, Mr. Plevris outlined the Greek government’s key priorities in the area of migration policy. Special emphasis was placed on the new, stricter legislative framework for addressing illegal migration, as well as the results achieved in reducing migration flows to Greece.

At the same time, he briefed the U.S. ambassador on the challenges facing the European Union in implementing the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. He emphasized the importance of protecting external borders, combating migrant smuggling networks, strengthening return procedures, and establishing a coherent pan-European framework for managing migration pressures.

In addition, they discussed international developments related to migration, as well as changes in the policies of many countries aimed at addressing irregular migration and refugee flows.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a high level of cooperation between Greece and the United States in the field of migration and asylum. They emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the relevant agencies, the exchange of expertise, and the application of best practices to address contemporary migration challenges. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum, Sevi Voloudaki.
