France and Greece are expected to renew their defensive agreement next week, Bloomberg notes in a report.

According to reports, the agreement, first signed in 202, will be renewed for another five years. French President Emanuel Macron is due to visit Athens after the EU leaders’ meeting in Cyprus, where he will meet with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to ratify the renewal.

At the same time, the two sides are expected to sign agreements to boost cooperation in areas such as foreign policy, civil protection and the economy.

The strengthening of defense capabilities has taken on particular importance in the run-up to 2021 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the war in Iran and growing uncertainty in transatlantic relations, against the backdrop of US threats to withdraw from NATO, the news network underlines.

The new agreement is expected to include an automatic renewal clause in the future, according to the same sources.
