According to European Regulation (EU) 2019/1157, “blue” police ID cards will no longer be accepted for travel abroad as of August 3, 2026. This is because, under the European regulation, ID cards from member states that do not have a machine-readable zone (MRZ) will no longer be considered valid.

What is the status of appointments?

Recently, the availability of appointments for issuing new ID cards has improved significantly. A large number of citizens have proceeded to obtain their new documents, and the delays experienced last winter are no longer occurring. Authorities estimate that by next winter, the situation will have fully normalized. There are still delays at some offices in central Athens, but these do not exceed 1–1.5 months; however, for urgent situations—such as health-related issues or student needs—special appointments are arranged to assist citizens.

Please note that, according to current guidelines, those who do not intend to travel abroad after August 3 do not need to have received the new vaccine earlier.
