Michalis Chrysochoidis’s moving statement
In a Facebook post, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis marked the 16th anniversary of the death of Brigadier General Giorgos Vasilakis, who lost his life in the line of duty due to a bomb explosion, just a few meters from the office of the then-minister at the Ministry of Citizen Protection.
Mr. Chrysochoidis described his loss as a constant reminder that terrorism is directed against democracy, institutions, and the people who devotedly serve the public interest. At the same time, he emphasized that Giorgos Vasilakis served the Greek Police with integrity, responsibility, and a deep sense of duty, leaving behind an example that continues to inspire.
He made special mention of their personal and professional relationship, noting that the deceased was not only a worthy officer but also a close colleague, with whom he shared difficult moments, anxieties, and the shared conviction that security and democracy require daily dedication and personal responsibility.
The minister also emphasized that the best way to honor his memory is through consistent service to duty and the defense of democratic values for which, as he noted, Giorgos Vasilakis gave his life.
Concluding his post, Michalis Chrysochoidis expressed his deep emotion and gratitude, emphasizing that the absence of Giorgos Vasilakis has never ceased to weigh heavily on his memory and soul, assuring that his memory remains alive and that “we will never forget him.”
