In a statement, the Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris emphasized:

“Athens has consistently been at the forefront of managing the impacts of migration. For this reason, the Ministry of Migration and Asylum is providing funding in the amount of 1,333,992 euros for the procurement of electric vehicles, electric motorcycles, and charging infrastructure, thereby substantially strengthening the important work of the Athens Municipal Police with modern resources that will improve its presence in neighborhoods, its ability to respond more quickly to citizens’ requests, and its overall operational effectiveness.

Giving back must be put into practice: the resources we manage must be returned to the areas of Athens that bear the heaviest burden and be transformed into projects that have a direct impact on citizens’ daily lives. The goal of our policy is to reduce irregular migration flows and increase returns, a policy that is already reflected in the data for the first five months of 2026.

Our cooperation with the City of Athens is ongoing and substantive. We are already in direct communication with the municipal authorities to examine and fund additional initiatives and projects that will strengthen the city’s infrastructure, services, and safety in the city, offering tangible and measurable benefits to the people of Athens.”

The Deputy Mayor for Municipal Police and Public Spaces, Eleni Zontirou, stated:

“The Athens Municipal Police is called upon daily to respond to hundreds of incidents across all the city’s neighborhoods. With 20 new electric vehicles, 30 motorcycles, and 20 charging stations, it is acquiring the tools it needs to be there for citizens more quickly and effectively. Expanding the fleet is not just about the equipment. It’s about better serving residents, protecting public spaces, supporting our most vulnerable fellow citizens, and maintaining accessibility in Athens’ neighborhoods. At the same time, we are investing in electric mobility and a more sustainable city, with fewer pollutants and a better quality of life for everyone. I would like to thank the Ministry of Migration and Asylum for its cooperation and support of a project that has a direct positive impact on the city.”
