According to the Fire Department, the fire that broke out in a lumberyard in an area between Lofoupoli and Agios Ioannis Chostos, in Heraklion Crete.
The fire broke out around 3:00 p.m., and the operation launched by the Fire Department, using both ground and aerial resources, was immediate, while reinforcements were continuously arriving.
As stated by Heraklion Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Syrigonakis, who was on the scene from the very beginning, “it appears that two businesses have been completely destroyed by the fire, and at least three houses have been damaged.”
The Deputy Regional Governor of Heraklion described it as a difficult operation, while congratulating the Fire Department on its prompt response.
The fire quickly spread due to the flammable materials present at the factory in Heraklion.
Due to the seriousness of the incident , emergency services were alerted via 112, and an alert message was sent to citizens’ cell phones due to the thick smoke.
