At the 152nd Plenary Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, on the theme “Cultivating hope, securing peace and guaranteeing justice for future generations”, was intervened by the Vice President of the Greek Parliament, Mr. Giannis Plakiotakis.
In his intervention he stressed the importance of democracy, the rule of law and respect for international law in a period of increased geopolitical challenges.
Mr. Plakiotakis stressed that peace requires credibility, justice and steady commitment to democratic principles, noting the crucial role of parliaments in ensuring institutional stability. Referring to the Eastern Mediterranean, he stressed that the challenges in the region reflected broader international trends and that respect for international law, in particular the Convention on the Law of the Sea, was a key prerequisite for peace and stability.

At the same time, he pointed out that utilization of energy resources and enhancing environmental cooperation can serve as areas of convergence and development, while highlighting the role of parliamentary diplomacy in maintaining dialogue and building partnerships.

In conclusion, he stressed the need for joint action to promote peace, democracy and justice, emphasizing that the future is shaped through conscious choices and collective responsibility.

At the same time, he reiterated Greece’s firm commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and dialogue, with respect to international law and the United Nations Charter, and underlined the role of parliaments in promoting peace and sustainable development.
