New Democracy is up one point in the polls, PASOK continues its downward trend, while the party Karystianou party appears to be on the decline.
The second polling cycle following the founding of the new parties shows ELAS led by Mr. Tsipras, a decline for “Elpida” led by Ms. Karystianou, and a rise for New Democracy, which appears to be benefiting from the realignment of the political landscape, according to a GPO poll for the newspaper “Parapolitika.”
In the voting intention poll, New Democracy garners 29.4%, while PASOK is losing ground and stands at 11.5%.
K. Mitsotakis, with 33%, continues to enjoy the highest level of trust among Greek citizens for the position of prime minister, followed by Alexis Tsipras, M. Karystianou with 15.5%, and N. Androulakis.
The question was posed separately for each candidate and should not be confused with the standard question regarding suitability. 29.2% of the total, an increase of approximately 2 percentage points, would like to see New Democracy remain in government and Kyriakos Mitsotakis continue as prime minister after the next elections, a percentage that reflects and describes the hard core of the ruling party and correlates to a significant degree with the electoral influence index.
The overwhelming majority—68%—continues to want a change in government; however, as we have pointed out in the past, this percentage is not directed toward a specific political entity that could serve as a strong alternative, but is spread across all opposition parties.
The dilemma “single-party government or coalition government” continues to divide the electorate, with 48.6% favoring a single-party government, even if it means holding repeat elections, while 46.3% favor a coalition government.
An overwhelming 81.9% of New Democracy (ND) voters support a single-party government, while support for a coalition is mainly found among voters of ELAS, PASOK, and the Freedom Movement. About half of the participants (49.8%) believe that a prolonged election campaign is not beneficial and that the country should hold early elections, compared to 44.9% who believe that the government should serve out its four-year term and that elections should be held at the scheduled time.
Voting Intent
In the voting intent table, New Democracy, with increased support, stands at 26% compared to 25% in the previous poll, ELAS also increases its support from 13.2% to 14.5%, while the downward trend continues for PASOK, which has fallen from 10.8% to 10.2% today.
“Elpida” has seen a significant and rapid drop of 2.3 points, which now stands at 6.9% down from 9.2% in the first poll, while the Freedom Course party also continues its downward trend, with its share now at 3.8%. Finally, a slight increase is recorded for both the Greek Solution and the KKE, at 8.2% and 8%, respectively.
