The Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, will meet tomorrow, Monday, June 29, at 12:00 p.m., with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Annita Dimitriou.
It should be noted that following the 2021 parliamentary elections, Ms. Dimitriou was announced by the president of DISY, Averof Neophytou, as the party’s candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives. During the vote on June 10, she was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives with the votes of DISY, ELAM, and DIPA.
During the 2023 presidential election campaign, she supported and nominated Averof Neophytou as DISY’s vice-presidential candidate.
Following Neophytou’s defeat and a decision by the party’s Political Bureau to convene an extraordinary electoral assembly to elect the party’s president and leadership, she submitted her candidacy for the presidency of DISY on February 21, 2023.
Neophytou was not a candidate in the party’s internal elections on March 11. The position was contested by Dimitriou and the current DISY MP and former party spokesperson, Dimitris Dimitriou, who is from Nicosia. In the end, Anita Dimitriou prevailed with 69.1% of the vote (14,287 votes) and was elected president. Dimitriou received 6,365 votes, or 30.8%.
