Thanos Plevris will vote for the waiver of immunity of 13 NDW MPs named in the two new files on the OPEKEPE.
In a statement to ERT, Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, stressed that he will vote in favour of the waivers of immunity, discussed today in Parliament, as “unlike ministers who when a file is sent negligently we have to evaluate the substance, in the case of MPs we do not evaluate the substance. Immunity is lifted if it falls or does not fall within the scope of parliamentary activity,” he said.
He also expressed the view that “all will be acquitted, but the vast majority will be filed and will not even reach the court.” “So I understand fellow MPs who are arguing that they want the case to be filed so that they can show that this is a ridiculous charge,” he said. He added that“the European Public Prosecutor is also being judged, as she is a prosecutor.”
Pleyris commented that for him the cases could have come as a whole. “I cannot know if there is a purpose, but I see a shortcoming that while the European Public Prosecutor knows that sending a file creates a political fact, she had all the time and could have sent the OPEKEPE case as a whole.”
He also stressed that “lifting immunity does not mean prosecution.”
