The European Union has unanimously approved a €90 billion loan to Ukraine and a new package of sanctions against Russia.
According to the Cyprus Presidency of the EU, the written procedure has been successfully concluded, with member states reaching a common position on both financing and on the 20th package of sanctions.
Cyprus’ finance minister Makis Keravnos said that the disbursement of funds will start “as soon as possible”, underlining the importance of support.
For his part, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski called the decision “an important day for our defense and our relations with the European Union“.
He said the funds will be used for strengthening the army, the supply of weapons, but also for strengthening critical infrastructure, especially in view of the coming winter.
At the same time, he expressed the view that the first tranche of the funding could be disbursed as early as May – June, accelerating the country’s economic and defense support.
