The need for immediate consensus between USand Iran, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In an interview with Breitbart News on the sidelines of the Delphi Economic Forum, he stressed that such a development is crucial for terminating the war in the Middle East.

The prime minister noted that a deal will also be instrumental in restoring stability to energy markets, which are under pressure due to prolonged tension in the region.

In his interview, Mr. Mitsotakis expresses hope that US President Donald Trump will be able to reach a deal with Iran that includes the opening of the Hormuz Strait. At the same time, it refers to Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Greece, stressing that the US president “will have a great time“.

Matthew Boyle, the journalist who interviewed the Greek prime minister, notes that the statement comes about a year after Mr. Mitsotakis’ statements about a win-win agreement between the US and the EU, an assessment that was confirmed by the signing of the agreement by Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen. In his new intervention, the prime minister returns, expressing hope for a similar development in US-Iran relations, stressing that the focus now shifts to economic implications and diplomacy.

“Hopefully there will be some form of agreement on the situation in the Middle East, as we are all concerned about the economic implications,” he said. “From the beginning we have been clear that Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon, and as a country in the region we are concerned about its destabilizing role. However, we have reached a point where we should be particularly concerned about the economic consequences of the situation.”

The Prime Minister also pointed out that developments in Iran and the Straits of Hormuz highlight the need for Europe to become more energy self-sufficient. In this context, he stressed that Greece is moving forward with natural gas exploration through partnerships with ExxonMobil and Chevron.

“This is a bell for Europe to become more realistic and more practical in terms of energy transition,” he noted. “We have supported both renewable energy and natural gas, proving that they can co-exist.”

Referring to Transatlantic relations, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the Iran crisis does not drive away but brings Europe and the US closer.

I believe this crisis will eventually bring the US and Europe closer together,” he said. “The transatlantic alliance still has much to offer.”

He also made special reference to the bilateral relations between Greece and the US, which he described as stronger than ever, noting that Donald Trump is expected to visit Greece soon.

I can guarantee that he will have a great time,” he said, adding that “Greeks are proud of their hospitality.”

The prime minister underlined the historical ties between the two countries, Greece’s geopolitical role in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the importance of the IMEC corridor for the India-Middle East-Europe link.

In terms of energy, he noted that contracts with ExxonMobil and Chevron have already been signed and that the first exploration activities are expected in the first quarter of 2027. “If successful, it will be a decisive development for Greece and Europe.”

Finally, he referred to Greece’s role as a mediator in regional crises, stressing the importance of the two-state solution for the Middle East and the need for progress in Gaza to ensure more stability in the region.
