The flagship of the Greek Navy, the state-of-the-art frigate “Kimon” arrived today (24/4/2026) for the first time at the port of Piraeus, attracting the attention of the citizens with her imposing presence.

The new era of the Armed Forces is now marked by the first Greek Belharra and by the new advanced and modern armament programmes.

The reason why the first Greek Belharra, the frigate “Kimon” arrived at the port of Piraeus is not accidental, as tomorrow morning (25/04/2026) the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron will visit her to renew the Greek-French defence agreement signed in 2021.

The visitMacron to Athens comes at a time when Greece has already emerged as a key pillar of stability for the West in the wider region. Active participation in missions, the presence of assets in Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as constant operational readiness, reinforce the country’s geopolitical footprint.

From France’s point of view, the strategic choice for a strong presence in the Eastern Mediterranean is clear. Paris sees Athens not just as a partner, but as a key link in a security chain stretching from the Mediterranean to the Middle East.

The cooperation is no longer limited to purchases of weapons systems, but is evolving into a multi-layered relationship that includes operational interoperability, intelligence sharing, joint training, industrial cooperation.

The French president’s visit to Athens has on its agenda a series of proposals to deepen bilateral relations in the defence and military sectors and sends a clear message to Turkey.

The presence of Mitsotakis and Macron on the frigate “Kimon” therefore has huge symbolism and substance that can be reflected in military armaments and more.
