The focus of preparations for the fire season was today on Crete, with the visit of the Minister Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tourna.

The day began with a meeting between the Minister and the Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis at his office in the Region. During the meeting, issues related to the armoring of the island, the strengthening of fire-fighting means and the close cooperation between the central administration and the local government to meet the challenges of the climate crisis were discussed.

This was followed by a wide coordination conference in the “PASIFAI I” room of the Aquila Atlantis Hotel, on the subject of “Preparing for the 2026 Fire Season in the Region of Crete“. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Fire Service, the Security Corps, the Municipalities and all civil protection agencies involved.

In his statements before the start of the meeting, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas stressed the importance of prevention and early coordination, noting that the readiness of the mechanism is the key to the protection of human life, property and the natural environment of Crete.

For his part, Regional Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis stressed that the Region is in full readiness, providing all the necessary means and personnel to assist in the work of the Fire Service. At the same time, he praised the cooperation with the Ministry, noting that the joint effort enhances the sense of security of citizens.
