A single ministry of education is on the table, research and innovation.

Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, the Minister of State Akis Skertos revealed that within 2-3 weeks the conclusion of the committee working on the relevant reform will be presented.

As he explained, the aim is to address the “fragmented landscape” in higher education, research and technology, where currently many institutions are active without a single policy-making centre.

Mr. Skertsos described the ministry being established as a key tool for the country’s growth and investment leap, noting that similar models have already been successfully implemented in European Union countries such as France and Scandinavian states.

He also stressed that Greece remains a “moderate innovation” economy, aiming to move up to the top, underlining the need for greater private sector involvement in research funding.

The new ministry, he said, will act as a “headquarters” for knowledge policies, aimed at linking education and the labour market and enhancing the so-called “knowledge workers“, leading to higher incomes and a better quality of life.
