The government stops the judicial claims of Government against the relatives of the victims in Tempi for compensation for mental anguish.

A decisive break in the way the state handles the legal consequences of the Tempi tragedy is being promoted by the government, attempting to normalize the state’s relationship with the victims.

A Council of Ministers has tabled a joint initiative by the Minister of National Economy, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Konstantinos Kyranakis, with the aim of ending the lengthy legal battles that are often experienced as an additional insult by families.

This proposal is not a random move, but the result of a “quieter” process and dialogue with the people affected by the accident. According to the regulation, the Greek State waives the right to pursue legal remedies and stops pending proceedings involving monetary damages for mental anguish, moral damages and physical injuries.

This intervention comes to “button up” the institutional framework for cases with special social importance, which was proposed by the Vice President of the Government, Kostis Hatzidakis.

Government officials point out that this move follows previous similar actions:

  • The earlier letter of Mr. Kyranakis to OSE for waiving compensation.
  • The withdrawal of an appeal for the tragedy at Mati by Mr. Pierrakakis.

The commitment to moral vindication of the victims without years of litigation.

The new provision applies both to cases in progress and those for which decisions have already been issued. By limiting State intervention exclusively to the compensation, the aim is to support the relatives without neglecting the protection of the public interest. Although the State cannot change the past, it chooses not to further burden citizens in a case with such a profound social and institutional impact.
