The Panathinaikos ranks sixth on The Athletic’s list of the most historic clubs that have not won the honorable trophy.

The inclusion of Panathinaikos among Europe that have not won a title Champions League decided the prestigious British medium “Athletic”. In the relevant ranking, the “trefoil” is in 6th place, being the only Greek representation, a fact that highlights its timeless European credentials.

The Green’s historic run peaked in 1971, when they became the first and only team from Greece to play in the final of the top intercollegiate competition, at the iconic Webley stadium. Despite the great successes that followed in the decades that followed, the club remained in the upper echelons of Europe, repeatedly coming close to the source.

Significant milestones in Panathinaikos’ European journey:

  • The 1985, when they reached the semi-finals of the Champions Cup, where they were eliminated by the mighty Liverpool.
  • The 1996, with an appearance in the semi-finals of the Champions League and a historic 1-0 away win over Ajax.
  • The 2002, on their way to the quarter-finals, where they beat Barcelona 1-0 in Athens.

The top of the British medium’s list is dominated by Atletico Madrid, while the top five is completed by Arsenal, Tottenham, Valencia and Anderlet. In the positions below Panathinaikos are historic names such as St. Etienne, Roma, Rheims and Dynamo Kyiv.
