The outlook for European maritime was the focus of the Summit in Lekosia, with the active participation of Eliza Vozemberg – Vryonidis.

The Informal Ministerial Meeting on Transport and Shipping in Lefkosia, Cyprus, was concluded in a particularly positive atmosphere, with the participation of the head of the New Democracy’s Eurogroup, Mrs. Eliza Vozemberg – Vryonidi, representing the European Parliament in her capacity as Chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Critical issues discussed at the informal ministerial meeting included the future of European ports and the modernisation and harmonisation of European railways.

Mrs. In her interventions, Ms. Wozemberg referred to the strengthening of safety, competitiveness and connectivity of European ports and the need to further integrate them into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

As regards European railways, Ms Wozemberg highlighted the need for better cooperation between Member States and the strengthening of funding for the European Railway Agency (ERA).

At the same time, the Greek MEP welcomed on behalf of the European Parliament the adoption of the Nicosia Declaration on the Future of European Shipping, stressing that investment in seafarers and the maritime profession is a strategic necessity for the transition of shipping to the new green and digital age.

In this context, Ms. Woseburg also participated as a key speaker at the Ministerial Stakeholder Conference on Seafarers, held in Lemesos, under the auspices of the Deputy Minister of Shipping of Cyprus, Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis, with the main topic being the role of seafarers and the future of global shipping.

During her speech, the Greek MEP stressed that Europe must invest strategically in the human resources of the sector, enhancing the attractiveness of the maritime profession and promoting equality, with a substantial participation of women in shipping.

At the same time, it highlighted the importance of a fair and people-centred green and digital transition, emphasising education, skills development and improving working conditions.
