Dmitris Sotiropoulos analyses from the perspective of a historian the unprecedented geopolitical upgrade of Greece in recent years by the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
In a post, Dmitris Sotiropoulos points out that this is the first time that Greece has had such an expanded geopolitical role, to the point where it is receiving praise from the US and its own president while causing irritation in Turkey. He says that in turbulent times from the Ukraine war and pandemic to the Iran war, the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has managed to exploit crises to Greece’s advantage.
And he explains the reasons why our country has been upgraded in recent times. And admittedly the list is impressive.
Greece’s geopolitical upgrade
As the well-known professor writes, Greece started to arm itself from 2021 onwards, especially after the Evros crisis, with a serious armament program (from Rafale, F16 Viper and F-35 to Belharra and the indigenous drone production program), when Europe was still sleeping the sleep of the righteous. And in the end, the European Union ended up following Greece’s policy, as it not only rearmed but also adopted our country’s proposal to exempt defense spending from the deficit.
At the same time, the Greek government took advantage of the crises with Russia and Iran to tighten our relations with the United States and, most importantly, to launch the vertical corridor project, a project of immense energy and geopolitical importance. At the same time, it has managed in this way to put Turkey even more in a corner.
And the sending of military aid to Cyprus, the patriot in Karpathos and the protection of Bulgaria’s airspace proved that the Greek government is turning Greece into a serious player in the Mediterranean and in Europe, so that even Trump himself took notice, who praised our country’s stance. At the same time, Greece managed to convince other European countries to send aid to Cyprus, sending a message to Erdogan.
Finally, as Dimitris Sotiropoulos argues, the recent defense agreement with France and the tightening of relations with Israel and Egypt, as well as the election of Kyriacos Pierrakakis to the Eurogroup presidency, show one thing: that Greece has moved up the geopolitical ladder and now has a voice and power abroad.
And all this shows that our country, since the bottom of 2015, has managed to impress with its economic, diplomatic and geopolitical successes.
There is also defeatist Greece
The well-known historian and president of the General State Archives concludes that despite all these unprecedented achievements, at home for years there has also been defeatist and miserable Greece that finds everything black, sees national defeats and conspiracies everywhere. Obviously for political reasons.
But, as he stresses, Greece has changed course and has a great opportunity in these troubled times to further enhance its position in Europe and to make a decisive contribution to the formation of the new doctrine of European security and, why not, to the new content of the concept of the West.
Of course all this did not happen by chance. They were done with methodical work by the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, no matter how much some people do not want to admit it for selfish purposes. And deep down even they know that at this moment there is no politician better suited to lead the country, and even more so at a time when historic changes are taking place on a global level.
