The Athens Bar Association’s decision, by a majority of a single vote,to call for the resignation of the prosecutor of the Aryonic Court, Konstantinos Tzavellas, is an institutional aberration.

Completely coincidentally, the request follows the strong reactions of the opposition, and in particular of PASOK and its chairman, Nikos Androulakis, who reacted strongly to the failure to withdraw the case of surveillance from the file with sharp statements.

The Hellenic Union of Public Prosecutors described the decision of the IACA as a “serious institutional aberration”and an unacceptable interference in the work of the judiciary, creating the feeling of a “war” between institutions that goes beyond legal boundaries.

However, behind the obvious, there is an obvious attempt to partition the institutional body of lawyers.

The perception that the IBA acts as the “spearhead” of the left-wing opposition, especially PASOK, is not new, but at the present juncture it seems that an attempt is being made in an organized manner by members of the Board of Directors to make the body of lawyers appear to be at the forefront of the opposition crescendo against the government.

In any case, it is explicit for academic and institutional bodies to interact in a manner that is identified with the agenda of particular parties, actively participating in the toxic political environment where legal reasoning is subordinated to political expediency.
