A preliminary investigation into the preliminary investigation reported by the Principal Authorities of University of Thessaloniki against the rector, Iakovos Michaelides, has been ordered by the Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki.
According to what is known, in the context of the prosecutorial investigation will examine whether the offences of unlawful violence and disruption of a public service (both together) are established.
The incident, the University Principal Authorities said in a statement, occurred last Thursday (30/4) inside the Administration Building. According to the same announcement, the assault occurred by a group of students and female students, with the support of Faculty members, aiming to annul a collective unanimous decision of the Senate regarding the regulation of the student residences.
Mr. Michaelides felt sick from the tension and aggression, interrupted a scheduled meeting with an international delegation from the University of Hong Kong and was taken to AHEPA hospital, where he left after being examined.
“Such phenomena have no place in a public university. They express a weak minority that attempts to impose its will through means of intimidation, insulting human dignity, endangering human life and undermining academic freedom and institutional functioning,” the statement of the Rectorate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki said. “Tolerance of such behaviour is zero. The Aristotelian University must and will remain a place of knowledge, safety and respect for institutions. Not a field of violence and arbitrary enforcement,” the same statement stressed.
