The European Commission responds with calm and determination to US warnings of imposing tariffs, urging faithful compliance with agreements.
Message of stability and commitment to institutional procedures was sent by European Union, reacting to new threats from Washington to tariffs of 25% on imports of European cars and trucks.
Commission spokesman, Tomas Renier, made clear that Europe remains committed to the joint declaration of cooperation, underlining the EU’s credibility as a global trading partner.
Specifically, Mr Renier said:“We are the most reliable partner around the world. When you sign a deal with the EU, you know that’s what you’re going to get“.
The spokesman stressed that Brussels is working methodically and in accordance with the law, adding:
“From day one we have been implementing the joint statement and we are fully committed to delivering on our joint commitments. Our work is done in accordance with the legislative procedures.”
Despite the escalating rhetoric from the American president, the Commission is keeping a low profile, seeking a diplomatic settlement of the dispute.
The main points of the European strategy include:
- Continuous talks with US counterparts to provide clarifications.
- Full focus on protecting European businesses and citizens.
- Wary of taking countermeasures only if the US violates what has been agreed.
In conclusion, Mr. Renier made it clear that the EU will not stand idly by in case of unilateral action, noting:
“If the US takes measures inconsistent with the joint statement, we will keep our options open to protect EU interests.”
