A tragic civilian hit-and-run incident in Leipzig has put German authorities on alert as they investigate the cause of the tragedy.

Scenes of horror unfolded Monday afternoon in central Leipzig when a vehicle crashed into pedestrians, leaving behind two dead and at least two seriously injured.

According to broadcaster MDR, police confirmed the incident in eastern Germany, but did not provide further details about the driver’s motives.

The testimonies from the scene of the attack, broadcast by Radio Leipzig, describe a shocking picture: A Volkswagen brand SUV was driving at breakneck speed on Grimmaische Straße. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a person on the roof of the vehicle. There are unconfirmed reports of a parallel stabbing incident.

The newspaper BILD confirms the high speed of the attacker, while authorities have cordoned off the area, where bodies covered in sheets can be seen.

This incident adds to a string of similar car attacks that have rocked Germany in recent years, including:

  1. The bloody attack at the Berlin Christmas market in 2016.
  2. The corresponding strike in Magdeburg in 2024.
  3. The dragging of ver.di in Monacho in early 2025.

Leipzig police continue their investigations to determine whether this is a terrorist act, a criminal act or an accident, while the local community remains frozen in the face of this new wave of violence.
