Strengthening the Greece-EU strategic alliance in defense, economics and security, with an emphasis on stability and navigation in the Persian Gulf.

At a time of increased geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the greater Persian Gulf, Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to the United Arab Emirates highlights Greece’s enhanced role as a reliable pillar of stability and security in the region. The diplomatic contacts in Abu Dhabi confirm the strategic deepening of Athens-Abu Dhabi cooperation, with a focus on defense, investment and maritime security, while at the same time sending a strong message in favor of free navigation and the prevention of further destabilization. The Greek Prime Minister’s presence at this critical juncture has not only a bilateral dimension, but is part of a broader framework of regional diplomacy, where Greece seeks to strengthen its footprint as a bridge of cooperation between Europe and the Gulf.

In particular, Kyriakos Mitsotakis reinforces the strategic alliance between Greece and the UAE with a message of strength, security and stability in the Gulf at a critical geopolitical juncture.

Episode of diplomatic stability

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in the United Arab Emirates on a visit of high symbolism and substance, sealing the strategic alliance between Athens and Abu Dhabi in defence, economy and regional stability. The visit comes at a particularly critical geopolitical juncture for the wider Gulf region, with the aim of sending a clear message in favour of security, freedom of navigation and international cooperation.

From Abu Dhabi, diplomatic sources describe the trip as an “episode of diplomatic stability” in the face of the tension caused by recent attacks in the region. The security environment remains heightened, with heightened alert measures and adjustments even to air travel to the country, underscoring the importance of the Greek prime minister’s presence.

With particular significance is the fact that Mitsotakis is the first leader of a European Union member state to visit the UAE since the attacks, which Greece had unequivocally condemned. This visit reinforces the strategic partnership that the two countries have been building since 2020, which includes – among other things – a defence assistance clause, an element of particular importance given that there is no geographical proximity or joint participation in allied structures.

The agenda

The agenda of the talks is dominated by regional security issues, with an emphasis on the need to ensure freedom of navigation and the smooth functioning of critical sea lanes such as the Straits of Hormuz. At the same time, the restoration of normality and the prevention of further destabilisation in the region is a priority.

In the same context, diplomatic sources point out that, following the message sent by the Emir of Qatar from Greek soil, a similar signal is expected to be sent by the current visit for Greece’s stabilising role in the Gulf. A role that, as they stressed, is reflected in practice through the defence assistance that Greece has provided to states in the region.

At the same time, the prospects of strengthening cooperation between Greece and the UAE in the fields of economy, investment and technology are also at the centre of the contacts, confirming the multi-level depth of the bilateral relationship.
