A strong reaction was caused by the orcism of Petros Konstantinos as a city councillor in the Municipality of Athens, on the occasion of the different wording of the oath he chose to pronounce.
Constantinou, who belongs to AntiparsyA which exchanges the one seat it holds on the city council, did not follow the prescribed text of the oath. Instead of the standard wording, which provides for fidelity to the Constitution and the laws of the Hellenic Republic, he made an extensive political statement with strong ideological and social content.
This choice provoked a reaction from the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, who spoke of “outrageous images” and a disparagement of the swearing-in process. In a public statement, he argued that the institutional oath was replaced by “anonymity“, stressing that the process cannot be considered valid without following the prescribed format.
“He has no place there whatsoever until he takes the legal oath,” he noted, raising the tone of the criticism.
For his part, Petros Constantinou chose to take an oath with a clear political stance, citing, among other things, defending workers, opposition to government policies, war and genocide in Gaza, as well as issues such as Tempi, Pylos, Palestine and social justice. His statement also included references to the Resistance, victims of violence, and calls for equality and separation of church and state.
According to the “Subversive Alliance for Athens” municipal faction, supporters and representatives of collective groups were present at the swearing-in ceremony, including Kostas Papadakis, Javed Aslam, whose asylum has been revoked by Lt. Immigration and Asylum, immigrant employees of the Municipality of Athens and activists from the Palestinian community.
