Several MEPs have spoken of problematic practices by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in the OPEKEPE case.
The study by the European Public Prosecutor, Laura Covesi, to send to the Parliament the subpoenas for explanations to the MEPs whose immunity has been lifted in the case of OPEKEPE he also confirmed the sloppiness followed throughout the process.
As it became known yesterday afternoon (the news was revealed by ptotothema) Ms. Covesi calls them to “apologize” for felony charges while the reason they were asked to waive their immunity under the plea agreement was for a misdemeanor!
Only two of the thirteen MPs, Katerina Papakosta and Kostas A. Karamanlis, are being investigated for a felony, as the amount they allegedly damaged the state exceeds 120,000 euros, while the other 11 are being investigated for misdemeanor offenses.
For the latter, the error in the summonses was found in the amounts, where they appeared to have also damaged more than 120,000 euros and were therefore liable for a felony, while the dictations that had been sent referred to much smaller amounts and therefore the offence was a misdemeanour.
In response to the gaffa of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, sources in the South West parliamentary group have spoken of “haste” and “sloppiness” governing the process. It is recalled that after the transmission of the OPEKEPE case files to the Parliament, there were several MPs who spoke of problematic practices of the European Prosecutor’s Office in the OPEKEPE case, leaving spikes for the practice of salami-slicing the case file.
The mistake made in the calls for explanations is a matter of time to be corrected, as the secretariat of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office was immediately informed of the mistake and the corrected calls will be sent in the coming days.
“A clerical error by the secretariat of the European Public Prosecutor,” said the well-known criminal lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, disclosing that the summonses concerning his own clients “were with the correct amounts” and added that this is a mistake that will be corrected in two or three days.
