Ten proposals on immigration and asylum were submitted to the Finance Committee of the European Parliament, Giorgos Avtias, as rapporteur of the European People’s Party.
According to a statement, Avtias “placed particular emphasis on the need for increased financing for regions under pressure from intense migratory flows and for adequate funding for the Greek borders, as is the case for the rest of Europe’s eastern borders.” At the same time, he also called for the completion of the Evros projects.
“I call for the completion of the works on Evros on the border with Turkey. Remember. There was a hybrid attack with 25,000 illegal migrants who wanted to break the border,” he said. He also stressed the need for a “strong presence” of Frontex in frontline member states and on speeding up procedures for “fast and efficient returns of irregular migrants to third countries, with full respect for human rights”.
The 10 proposals he presented to the Finance Committee are:
1. Increase funding for migration and asylum.
2. Allow for transfer of funds between funds related to migration and asylum.
3. Strengthening the presence of Frontex in frontline states.
4. Fast and efficient procedures for the return of irregular migrants to third countries, with full respect for human rights.
5. Sustained funding for regions under pressure from intense migratory flows.
