The Minister Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias said on Thursday that Greece is interested in acquisition of Brazilian Embraer military C-390 aircraft, which are partly produced in Portugal, Reuters reported.
According to the same source, Nikos Dendias, who is on a two-day visit to Portugal, made the statement after his meeting in Lisbon with his Portuguese counterpart Nuno Melo.
“We had the opportunity to discuss many issues … one of them was the possibility of purchasing the C-390 aircraft,” the defence minister said.
He gave no further details on the number of aircraft or the cost of the potential deal.
Greece, which currently has C-130 and C-27 aircraft, plans to spend about $28 billion. euros by 2036 to modernise its armed forces as it emerges from the 2009-2018 economic crisis, the news outlet highlights.
Portuguese company OGMA, a 65% subsidiary of Embraer and the rest owned by the Portuguese state, is a key industrial partner in the C-390 programme, manufacturing parts of the main fuselage that are shipped to Brazil for final assembly.
Portugal was the first European country and NATO member to order the C-390 in 2019 and has already taken delivery of some units in previous years.
