Adonis Georgiades intervened in the debate on bill of the Innovation Fund, defending the government plan for renewable energy as a means of providing relief to citizens.

As part of the debate in the Plenary of the House of Representatives on the bill on the “Innovation Fund and Access to New Medicines“, Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiades, responded to the criticisms of the President of the Hellenic Solution, Kyriakos Velopoulos, on energy issues.

The Georgiadis assured the body that the government has a comprehensive plan that is already being implemented, aimed at producing stable and cheap energy from Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

He stressed that these actions are aimed exclusively at the benefit of the Greek people, rejecting the opposition’s accusations of inadequacy in the country’s energy strategy.

The minister, commenting on thecritical references by the president of the Hellenic Solution to Greece’s stance on Ukraine, said that “I cannot honestly understand how you can disagree and call for not support a country fighting for its independence and not condemn an invasion“, adding that “when you in Parliament so passionately support Putin and his illegal invasion of Ukraine, you serve neither the national position nor Greek interests.”

On the country’s gas supply, Mr. Georgiades said that “Greece with the vertical corridor is a gateway for American LNG and has no issue of gas sufficiency and does not need to buy from Russia” and accused the president of Hellenic Solution that “you cannot give any credit to this government because you lack political greatness.”

For energy production from lignite plants – about which Mr. Velopoulos argued that we are wrongly closing them – the minister said that in a few days a major study done by the Greek Cancer Federation and the University of Western Macedonia on Kozani will be presented, which unfortunately turns out to be the region with the highest cancer rate in the country, with the only logical explanation being long-term human use of lignite and its pollutants.

“That is why we intend to build from the resources of the Fair Transition Fund a large multi-million dollar radiotherapy facility for oncology patients as a compensation for the state,” he said. Georgiades commenting “I am surprised that you prefer lignite and cancer to wind turbines” and said: “With the policy of the ND government and Mr Mitsotakis, Greece in 2026 has cheaper electricity from renewables and we export it to other countries.”

Mr. Georgiades remarked to Velopoulos that on gas extraction “the prime minister said nothing different today from the policy that the Greek government has been pursuing all this time. We are the government that is doing the first gas exploration in the Ionian Sea for 70 years, we are also proceeding with exploration south of Crete and we did not expect the Greek Solution and you, although I acknowledge that you have been serving this line consistently for many years and you were among the first”.

The minister dismissed as “tyrannical” the reports of the president of Hellenic Solution on the tragedy of Heliopolis, blaming the government for the despair felt by young people and accused the president of Hellenic Solution that “you cannot acknowledge any good in this government because you lack political greatness“.
