At the 16th Conference of the New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to highlight economy, precision, stability, a third four-year term and Greece’s role in Europe.
With a focus on the economy, stability and the country’s position in European developments, the 16th Ordinary Congress of the New Democracy will open with Kyriakos Mitsotakis expected to present the political and governmental stance for the next period. According to reports, the prime minister will give an extensive account of the government’s work for the period 2023-2027, with particular emphasis on the election commitments that, he will argue, have already been implemented. At the same time, he will attempt to answer the central political question of the need for a third four-year term, focusing on the challenges of accuracy, on international geopolitical and energy developments, but also on the importance of political continuity in a period of uncertainty for Europe and the global economy. In his speech, he is also expected to highlightthe government’s interventions on the cost of living, tax cuts, pay rises and Greece’s role in the European Union, in view of the country’s assumption of the EU Presidency.
In the same context,Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to give particular emphasis to the message of political stability and government consistency, attempting to connect the country’s progress in recent years with the challenges of the next period. At the same time, he will try to address not only the New Democracy party audience, but also the citizens who had supported the party in previous elections, highlighting the need to maintain the growth trajectory of the Greek economy in a unstable international environment.
The context of the speech
In particular, in his speech, with which he will open the proceedings of the 16th Ordinary Congress of the New Democracy Party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will, according to reports, first of all, take stock of the government’s work with emphasis on the 25 emblematic programmatic commitments of 2023-2027, which the New Democracy Party has put into practice.
The Prime Minister will take stock of the situation in order to demonstrate that the relationship of trust with citizens is built with credibility and on the phrase “what we told you, we did”. After that, and without any arrogance, but showing his empathy for the problems of society, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to answer the question “Why a third four-year term?” Noting that both he and all the executives of the Southwest must work with their eyes down and recognizing the problems that citizens face in their daily lives, he will present the projections and directions for the cycle of the third four-year term, which will be transformed into an electoral program when the road to the polls opens. Pointing out not only the opposition’s inability to put forward an alternative proposal, but also outlining the importance of keeping the country on a growth path that will allow the policy of tax cuts and increases to continue.
The Prime Minister will make a special reference to the issue of accuracy, which is making things difficult for citizens and which is not only a Greek issue, but an international one. And he will refer to the support initiatives the government has taken in the face of the increased cost of living, with tax cuts and permanent salary increases, without putting the country again in fiscal risk. In this context, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will insist a lot on the difficult international situation and the world-changing events expected in the next 5 years and the position Greece should have in a world and especially in a dramatically changing Europe. It will not hide the consequences of the uncertain international environment, consequences that will be economic, geopolitical and energy-related. He will thus highlight, as his colleagues have said, the importance for every country, and more so for ours in this region, of stability and internal political normality. Pointing out that these are conquests of the country, which only the Southwest guarantees.
At this point, the Prime Minister is expected to add the critical juncture of Greece’s assumption of the EU Presidency, at a time when the Union will be called upon to draw up the new CAP, but also to promote positions that were predominantly Greek and were set by him, such as common defence and Strategic Autonomy.
As for his criticism of the opposition, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is reportedly expected to be sparing, limiting himself to the toxicity and disparity of their forces, which are coming together with the sole aim of bringing down the government. Also, part of his speech will be devoted to the party’s action and its unity, against the whispers that question it. Besides, this is also a speech that will arm the delegates with arguments in view of the electoral battle that each one will fight.
Finally, although he will address a party audience, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will outline the political and ideological identity of the Southwest, calling for rallying all those with whom the party met in 2019 and 2023.
