The American State Department announced the extension of the cease of hostilities with a view to resuming negotiations, while Tel Aviv warns Hezbollah in Tyre.
A major diplomatic breath of fresh air was given on Friday (15/05) as US State Department announced the agreement to extend the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon for an additional 45 days.
State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott confirmed that the “cease of hostilities” – which has been in effect since April 16 – is being extended to allow time for further diplomatic progress.
According to him, the formal resumption of the course of negotiations is scheduled for 2 and 3 June.
However, this agreement is put to the test on the ground from the outset.
Almost simultaneously with the announcement, the Israeli military’s spokesman for the Arabic-speaking public issued an urgent warning to Lebanese residents of the coastal city of Tyre, directly accusing Hezbollah of violating the terms of the ceasefire.
