The presence of the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, at the “5” Outpost in Nea Vyssa Evros was highly symbolic.

The state’s top ruler chose to spend the night at one of the most forward points on the Greek-Turkish border, next to the recruits and members of the Armed Forces.

Konstantinos Tasoulas arrived at the outpost late Saturday afternoon, accompanied by Chief GENDF, General Demitrios Houpis, as well as the commander of the Supreme Military Command of Thrace, Lieutenant General Panagiotis Kavidopoulos.

Tour and overnight stay at the outpost

On his arrival at Outpost “5”, the President of the Republic was briefed in detail on the operation and mission of the unit by the sergeant-at-arms, while he had the opportunity to talk to the conscripts and officers serving in the border area.

Then he had dinner with the staff, choosing to share the daily life of the people serving at the border of Evros.

On Sunday morning, Constantine Tasoulas woke up with the staff of the outpost and attended the ceremony of raising the 96-square-meter Greek flag.

Addressing the conscripts who participated in the flag-raising ceremony, he stressed the importance of their service in such a sensitive part of the country, telling them that these moments will remain unforgettable in the future.

After the ceremony, he had breakfast with the staff and wished the new soldiers to become “good citizens” and have “a bright future”.

Constantine Tasoulas’ statement from Evros

The President of the Republic particularly emphasized the role played by the outpost and the sense of responsibility that, he said, distinguishes those who serve there.

“We are at the Outpost “5” of the Greek-Turkish border in Evros prefecture. This Outpost is located in one of the most advanced points of our border and the mission of the Outpost is to protect and monitor the border,” he said.

Then he added: “I had the opportunity to spend 12 hours here with the enlisted men and officers, to spend the night, to talk with them, to experience a little bit of the way they spend their time and perform their high duties. The demands on this outpost are very high. Therefore the sense of responsibility that prevails and is pervasive is also equally high.”

“Here in Evros the flag waves differently”

Special mention was made by Konstantinos Tasoulas to the flying of the flag and the climate prevailing in the border Evros.

“This morning, Sunday, we watched the raising of the Greek flag early. We felt this pride, this mental exhilaration that our soldiers and officers feel here, as well as our soldiers and officers.”

He also noted that “Not all parts of Greece are the same.”

He also noted. Here in Evros, there is an air that fills you with confidence and, dare I say, national pride. The guys who serve with their officers understand what their mission is by the look in their eyes. They see the border, they see Turkey in very close proximity and they see the space that they have to guard. And I assure you, they guard it with integrity, with responsibility, with tenacity, with virtue and with a sense of their historic mission.”

Concluding his statement, the President of the Republic sent a message on border security and the role of the Armed Forces. The Greek flag meets the wind of Greece and proudly shows everyone that any challenge and any threat will not pass.

As I have said before, our borders, fortunately, are in very good hands.”
