Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the ceasefire, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and stability in the Middle East.

At a critical juncture for geopolitical developments in Middle East, US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation, with the agenda including regional tensions, diplomatic initiatives for de-escalation and developments in Syria and Lebanon. Erdogan described the extension of the ceasefire in the region as positive, stressing that there is room for a “reasonable solution”to the disputed issues, while reiterating that Ankara will continue to support any constructive initiative that can contribute to stability. At the same time, he stressed the importance of maintaining security in Syria, noting that Turkey will continue to provide support to Damascus, and referred to the need to prevent further destabilization in Lebanon. The conversation also touched on preparations for the NATO Summit in Ankara, with the Turkish president assuring that his country is working for its successful holding.

The Issues

As SKAI’s Istanbul correspondent Manolis Kostidis reports, the leaders discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and the US, as well as regional and global issues.

During the phone call, Erdogan said he considers the decision to extend the ceasefire in the conflict in our region as a positive development, that he believes a reasonable solution to the disputed issues is possible and that Turkey will continue to support the constructive initiatives proposed.

The Turkish President said that the establishment of stability in Syria is an important gain for the entire region, that Turkey’s support to Syria will continue uninterrupted and that it is also necessary to prevent the deterioration of the situation in Lebanon.

Erdogan said preparations for the NATO Summit in Ankara are underway and that Turkey is making every effort to ensure the success of the summit in all aspects.

During the phone call, the Turkish president expressed his condolences to the US president over the heinous attack on a mosque in San Diego the previous day and said Turkey opposes such hate crimes regardless of the religious group targeted.
