Kostas Bakoyannis, son of the murdered by Pavlos Bakogiannis, took a public position on the release of Alexander Yiotopoulos.

Speaking on the show “Smile Again” on Mega on Saturday morning (23/5), he described his first reaction when he saw the news about the release of the convicted leader of the terrorist organization.

“I woke up and looked at the sites and thought if I hit him on the street, what am I going to do? And if our kids see him, what are we going to do?” he said.

Kostas Bakoyannis: The reference to justice and sentencing

Then Kostas Bakoyannis explained that he tried to manage his thoughts calmly, noting that there are families of victims who experience the same pain without being able to speak publicly.

“Then I corrected myself because I can share it publicly, but there are others who can’t. We have a system that needs to be revisited. He has been sentenced to life 17 times but served 1.5 years for each murder. Do we consider that justice? It’s beyond me.”

He also paid particular attention to the difficult conversations within the family, revealing that he even received a question about it from his son.

“What he will tell his children about this case: Yesterday my son called me on the phone and asked me. The answer is difficult. I want my kids to feel safe and loved. Everything I answer them I answer through that lens.”

“I couldn’t bear to watch the documentary on 17 November”

Elsewhere in the interview, the former mayor of Athens also referred to SKAI’s documentary on the action of 17 November, which also featured an interview with Dmitris Koufontina.

He said he was unable to watch it.

“We politicians have to be careful what we say about justice. Politics is the art of results but also being able to step into the shoes of others. We politicize deaths, but in cemeteries we are all equal.”

He concluded: “I couldn’t bear to watch the documentary about 17 November, and I never want to watch it in my life.”
