The universal implementation of electronic prescribing in the country’s public hospitals from July 1, Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, during the proceedings of the 3rd SFEE Summit at the Athens Concert Hall.
What changes with the new system
As the minister said, through the new system with electronic platform it will be possible to accurately control therapies administered to patients, the reasons for which they are prescribed, but also the cases where certain treatments are used more frequently than others.
At the same time, he stressed that the government’s main objective is to ensure unhindered access for all citizens to the necessary medicines. In fact, he noted that Greece currently registers the fewest shortages of medicines in Europe, attributing this development to the policy followed in previous years.
The challenge of expensive innovative treatments
The Adonis Georgiades focused in particular on the challenges posed by the rapid development of new innovative treatments, which, he said, are significantly more expensive and are putting increasing pressure on national budgets.
“The challenge is for state budgets to withstand the very large innovation that is being generated at an ever-increasing rate. This will not be easy,” he said, adding that Greece remains highly competitive in the pharmaceutical sector.
Closing his statement, the minister stressed that the issue of pharmaceuticals concerns the whole of society and highlighted the need for an ongoing dialogue on the challenges and solutions that will ensure the future sustainability of the system and citizens’ access to quality health services.
