George Tsipras harshly criticized the latest developments in SYRIZA and appeared to distance himself from Alexis Tsipras and ELAS.

Specifically, on Open TV, George Tsipras appeared opposed to the dissolution of SYRIZA in order to join ELAS, saying that the party had committed political suicide in this way, thereby validating the positions of Pavlos Polakis and Nikos Pappas. In fact, he continued his criticism of SYRIZA, saying that now only its… corpse will remain.

The most interesting thing, however, is that he also blamed the leadership of Alexis Tsipras for the dissolution of SYRIZA, saying that the party’s degeneration began during the former prime minister’s presidency. According to him, SYRIZA as a government could have done 10 things but did only one, and at some point it was “every man for himself.”

Criticism of Alexis Tsipras

In fact, the former prime minister’s cousin did not hold back in his criticism of Alexis Tsipras. Initially, he clearly distanced himself from the Hellenic Police, saying that he doesn’t belong anywhere and that nothing represents him at this moment.

Continuing his attack on Alexis Tsipras, he stated that the interest being shown in the former prime minister’s new venture ahead of the elections is due more to the “fragility” of the rest of the center-left rather than any political “rebirth.” In fact, when asked whether Alexis Tsipras is returning a changed man, George Tsipras avoided giving a clear answer: “I don’t know if this Tsipras is a different person,” he said, adding pointedly that “in politics, there is no such thing as a political ‘virgin birth.’”

There was no self-criticism

He himself emphasized that there is indeed a void on the Left and that this helps Alexis Tsipras but he does not believe he can appeal to a broader audience than the one that voted for him in 2023. Moreover, he explained that the former prime minister and his leadership team avoid making a substantive assessment of their actions and mistakes.

Finally, he insisted that he will not support ELAS, stating that he does not support any party and wants to support a truly progressive front against the Right.

It appears that George Tsipras is dissatisfied with his cousin. Perhaps, as the former financial director of the Prime Minister’s office during the SYRIZA government, he knows a little more about who Alexis Tsipras is and what happened during that period.
