A tragic outcome befell fire that broke out on Monday morning in a container in the city of Konitsa Ioannina, in which four people were found dead.
The victims were four siblings, three women and one man, aged 69, 75, 83, and 88 years old, who had been living in the container that had been provided to them 30 years ago, following the major Konitsa earthquake.
The container was located on their field next to the Konitsa bridge. According to neighbors, the unfortunate siblings lived in difficult conditions, without electricity, and occasionally faced health problems. It cannot be ruled out that the fire was caused by a candle or oil lamp they had lit to provide some light. According to reports, Social Services had previously been tasked with cleaning the container.
Five fire trucks with 10 firefighters from Konitsa and Ioannina responded to the scene, while the Investigation Department of the Ioannina Prefecture Fire Services Directorate, forces from the Greek Police and an EKAV ambulance.
The exact causes of the fire are under investigation.
