Alexandros Giotopoulos is being taken today to the prosecutor of the Court of Appeals Piraeus, following the reversal of his release from prison by the Supreme Court, having spent the night at the GADA due to pending issues in the process of his return to prison.

Release from prison was canceled – The prison sentence was pending

The Piraeus Appeals Prosecutor is expected to hear the case today, Tuesday, June 16, Alexandros Giotopoulos, in order to complete the necessary legal procedures for the enforcement of the Supreme Court decision and his return to Korydallos Prison.

The convicted leader of the November 17 group, who remained out of prison for 25 days, spent the night in the holding cells of the GADA, as his immediate return to the correctional facility was not possible.

This development followed the decision by the Fifth Criminal Division of the Supreme Court to accept the appeal filed by the prosecutor, overturning the ruling on the basis of which Giotopoulos had been released last May, after 24 years in prison.

Despite the prosecutor’s order for his return to prison, the process was not completed, as the necessary committal order had not been issued, a fact that prevented the immediate enforcement of the decision.

On Monday afternoon, Alexandros Giotopoulos left his home in Vyronas and boarded a taxi bound for Korydallos Prison, escorted by patrol cars from the Hellenic Police.. Shortly thereafter, the police officers transported him in a police vehicle to the correctional facility.

However, the Korydallos Prison did not accept him, as the required administrative procedures were pending. The absence of the relevant committal document made his official readmission impossible.

Contacts ensued between the prison prosecutor and the appeals prosecutor to find a solution regarding his temporary detention. However, no mutually acceptable procedure was found that would allow him to remain in Korydallos, resulting in his return to GADA, where he was held throughout the night.
